To cover most of the bases of the benefits of this route to making your life long connection, I will borrow from my childhood experience in 4-H...
Hands - Getting an incredible assortment to choose from is probably one of the best reasons for shopping at the shelter. You can touch and handle the pets and get your hands right on the goal of your visit. There is something for everyone-purebreds and mixed breeds, short hair and long hair, active and passive, young and older, you can see them all! Just get in there, bask in the variety and find the right one for you!
Health - at Angels for Animals our pets go through a rigorous exam by our caring veterinarians. Besides the very important spay or neuter, our pets get the proper species vaccinations, de-worming, flea control and rabies vaccinations. Our dogs are heartworm tested and started on heartworm preventative. Our cats are tested for AIDES and leukemia. All of our pets get additional stool checks. As a big bonus, Angels pets are micro-chipped. All of this is done for an adoption fee that is about 20% of what you would have to pay for these services in the open market, thanks to generous donors who want to help these homeless pets find a forever home.
Head - When you adopt at a shelter you are smart. You get all the knowledge of a great caring staff and veteran volunteers. They want to see you get the right pet. When you adopt a shelter pet you get a great selection, a great deal on health care, and you are doing "the right thing" by giving a homeless animal the chance to live a long, happy life instead of adding to the trash in a landfill.
Heart - Of course the most important personal reason to adopt a shelter pet is unconditional love, the thing all beings seek. Any pet that has suffered hardship in its past such as lack of food, attention, a warm place to sleep will be very grateful for any of these things. The goal for these sweet orphans is to attain a permanent loving, life-long home!
Oh yes- the fifth 'H', for you and your pet, Happiness!
